Postpartum Therapy: Support in the Afterbirth Period

As a psychotherapist, I have worked with many mothers who experience a mix of conflicting emotions after the birth of a child. Often, these emotions are felt as an enormous pressure: the joy of becoming a parent is intertwined with anxiety, extreme fatigue, and, in some cases, sadness. It is completely normal to feel overwhelmed, and postpartum therapy is an opportunity to understand and process these feelings in a healthy and balanced way.
Studies show that up to 80% of mothers may experience what is called "baby blues," a period of emotional instability that typically lasts a few days or weeks after childbirth. However, for some, these feelings may evolve into a deeper postpartum depression, which can affect both emotional and physical health. In this context, postpartum therapy can become an essential tool for preventing and treating these disorders. Through guided discussions and stress management techniques, the mother learns to recognize and express her emotions in a healthy way, contributing to a faster and more complete recovery.

From a scientific standpoint, the postpartum period is marked by a series of hormonal and physiological changes that can influence emotional states. The increase in oxytocin levels, the bonding hormone, plays an essential role in the attachment process but can also lead to feelings of vulnerability. In this context, therapy helps the mother understand the connection between her body and her emotions, teaching her to manage anxiety and regain emotional stability.

In addition to these aspects, postpartum therapy is also a tool for preventing relationship issues with the partner, who may feel a disconnect due to new responsibilities. Open communication, mutual support, and conflict resolution techniques within the couple are essential for building a solid foundation for the family. These approaches help parents support each other, recognize, and appreciate the changes they go through together.

Postpartum therapy is not just about overcoming challenges; it is also about learning to take care of yourself. With the support of a professional, mothers can learn strategies for self-reflection, stress management, and mental health care, which contribute not only to a faster recovery but also to a stronger and healthier bond between mother, child, and partner.
Thus, postpartum therapy becomes a valuable investment in the long-term emotional health of every mother.
